Established
on
article
12
of
the
Kyoto
Protocol,
the
Clean
Development
Mechanism
(CDM)
aims
at
reducing
greenhouse
gas
emissions
and
at
supporting
sustainable
development
in
developing
countries.
The
reduction
of
emissions
resulting
from
the
implementation
of
environmental
projects
in
countries
such
as
Brazil
can
be
used
to
meet
emission
reduction
goals
in
industrialized
countries.
The
principle
is
simple:
each
ton
of
carbon
that
is
removed
from
the
atmosphere,
or
whose
release
is
avoided,
can
be
purchased
by
a
country
that
wishes
to
meet
reduction
goals.
It
is
thus
created
a
worldwide
market
of
Certified
Emission
Reductions
(CERs).
