Context

Remediation of an environmental liability at an industrial adhesives plant, located within an industrial zone and immediately adjacent to a residential condominium.

Preliminary Survey

At first, the property was the object of an Environmental Audit, which allowed for the identification of the primary sources of impact to the soil and groundwater. The results of this initial effort allowed for the planning of a more detailed Environmental Assessment and Interim Remedial Action, which consisted of the removal of the sources of impact identified. The Environmental Assessment revealed a distinctive hydrogeological context, with low-permeability soils. The contaminants were distributed in a way that affected external receptors.

Elimination of the Sources

The removal of the sources of contamination was essential for the success of the remediation project. The identified sources and the surrounding soil (secondary sources of impact) contained a high percentage of the total mass of contaminants present in the area.

Due to physical limitations, only the primary sources and a portion of the secondary sources were removed. Nevertheless, this action ensured the minimization of the contribution of contaminants to the soil and groundwater, significantly reducing the total remediation costs.

All removed material was treated as hazardous solid waste and shipped for incineration.

Assessment of the Remediation Alternatives

In a partnership with international companies, we developed a feasibility study for several remediation alternatives, considering each alternative's performance, reliability, ease of implementation, occupational safety, costs, operation schedule, and monitoring.

Pilot Test

Based on the local characteristics, the selected alternative was butane biostimulation. Prior to the implementation of the full-scale system, a pilot test is being conducted to assess the use of the technique for the specific site conditions, with promising initial results.

Following StagesSteps

The next stages consist of the full-scale implementation of the butane biostimulation technology, and of the operation and monitoring of the remediation system. The schedule anticipated for the conclusion closure of the case, with the reduction in the contaminant concentrations to acceptable risk levels, is between 1.5 and 2 2 years.
