Description

Landfill gas (LFG) collection, incineration and use
Total project value: R$ 5,000,000

Location

The landfill is located in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area. The site receives approximately 2,000 tons/day of domestic waste, as well as small amounts of solid industrial waste from neighboring municipalities. The landfill has been operational since 1987, and has, so far, received 6.1 million tons of wastes. An additional amount of 4.8 million tons of waste is expected until its closure, planned for the year 2014.

Goals and Benefits

The project's primary goal is the installation of a LFG collection and incineration unit. The project's key benefit will be the reduction of approximately 593,000 tons of methane emissions during the next two decades. In the future, the LFG shall be used for electric power generation.

The project was developed as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, resulting in the generation of approximately 500,000 Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits per year. Part of the revenue from the generation and sales of carbon credits will be used to support a comprehensive social program, benefiting the local residents.
